# Oil tanks in a New Jersey home sale

* **No legal mandate to sweep.** Tank sweeps are driven by buyers, lenders and insurers, not by statute.
* **Closing a tank is regulated.** Removing or abandoning an underground heating-oil tank in place must be done by a firm certified by NJDEP for UST closure (CLOSURE or HHO CLOSURE cert type), N.J.A.C. 7:14B ([NJDEP Unregulated Heating Oil Tanks](https://dep.nj.gov/srp/unregulated/); [FAQ](https://nj.gov/dep/srp/unregulatedtanks/faqs.html)).
* A closure firm can do remediation only if it is also certified for subsurface evaluation.
* Costs: sweeps are often quoted at about $200-$500 (**estimate**, unsourced). Removal and any remediation vary widely, so get written quotes.
